Spatz3 Gastric Balloon Q & A

What is the Spatz3 gastric balloon?

The Spatz3 gastric balloon is a saline-filled balloon that Dr. Liu inserts into your stomach during a quick, outpatient procedure. Once placed, the balloon fills about a third of your stomach cavity, making you feel fuller quicker. The balloon also affects the way your stomach empties, allowing you to eat smaller meals and snacks.

What benefits does the Spatz3 gastric balloon offer?

The Spatz3 gastric balloon offers various benefits compared to other similar devices on the market. Two factors, in particular, stand out:

It’s adjustable

The Spatz3 gastric balloon is adjustable. Over the course of treatment, Dr. Liu can fill or empty the saline solution as required.

It’s approved for a longer implantation time

Most gastric balloons require removal after six months. The Spatz3 gastric balloon is unique in that it can be left in longer. This gives you more time to modify your behavior, ensuring you achieve lasting results.

What happens during a Spatz3 gastric balloon procedure?

Dr. Liu inserts your Spatz3 gastric balloon during an in-office procedure.

At the beginning of your appointment, you lie down on your back on a hospital bed, and Dr. Liu administers general anesthesia. After you fall asleep, Dr. Liu carefully inserts an endoscope –– a thin tube with a light and a camera on the end –– through your mouth, down your esophagus, and into your stomach.

Next, Dr. Liu inserts the Spatz3 gastric balloon through the endoscope. Once the balloon is in your stomach, Dr. Liu fills it with a sterile saline solution. Then, he carefully removes the endoscope and moves you to a recovery room for observation.

Placing the Spatz3 gastric balloon takes about 15 minutes. You relax at the office for about an hour until the anesthesia wears off.

How much weight can I lose with the Spatz3 gastric balloon?

The amount of weight you lose with the Spatz3 gastric balloon depends on several factors, including your commitment to Dr. Liu’s treatment plan, the foods you eat, and your commitment to regular exercise. Most people lose between 35-55 pounds over the course of the first year, but it’s possible to lose even more.

Every few weeks, you visit SkyLex Health for a checkup. Dr. Liu monitors your progress over time and makes adjustments as necessary.
