What to Expect - The Weight Loss Surgery Process with Gastric Bypass
Lap Band Beverly Hills, California
Gastric Bypass Surgery is one of the most common forms of weight loss surgery performed in the Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Irvine and Culver City, area. The Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery performed by Dr. Carson Liu™ has been performed for more than 20 years with fantastic results.
During Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery, Dr. Liu will surgically divide your stomach to create a small stomach pouch at the top of the stomach. This small pouch will be able to hold one to two ounces of food.
Two Surgical Methods
Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass can be performed either openly or laparoscopically. They are both done under general anesthesia so that you will feel no pain during the procedure.
During Open Gastric Bypass Surgery, an incision is made above the abdomen so that Dr. Liu can see the stomach area and perform the procedure.
With Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass Surgery, several small incisions are made around the abdomen and a small camera is inserted so that Dr. Liu can monitor the procedure.
The small intestine is cut and attached to the small stomach pouch, bypassing most of the stomach that has been divided and a small portion of the small intestine.
After the Gastric Bypass Surgery, a small tube will be inserted through the mouth and into the small stomach pouch to make sure the pouch is empty and allow the staples dividing the stomach to heal. Sometimes another tube is inserted into the larger lower stomach to help with healing. You will recover for a few days in the hospital so that Dr. Liu can monitor your healing.
How Gastric Bypass Surgery Works
With Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass Surgery, food never enters the large, lower part of the stomach, but digestive juices are still allowed to mix with food in the small intestine. The resulting digestive process absorbs fewer calories and allows you to lose a large amount of weight.
it is important that you adopt healthy eating habits and an exercise routine to make sure the weight loss is permanent. Weight loss surgery is not a cure-all solution to being overweight. For many people, medication and vitamin supplements are needed to help with digestion and to make sure the body gets the appropriate amount of nutrients.
