StomaphyX™
Weight Loss Surgery in Los Angeles, CA
Bariatric surgery can have excellent results, with patients losing an average of 60 to 80 percent of their excess weight. But sometimes patients can regain significant weight a few years after the first surgery. This is often due to the stomach pouch and/or stomach outlet stretching over time.
StomaphyX™ is a new, ground-breaking revisional procedure that can help patients who are unsatisfied with the results of their previous Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery.
How it Works
The incision-free StomaphyX™ procedure decreases a patient’s stomach pouch and stomach outlet, called a stoma, to the original gastric bypass size.
The treatment involves placing an endoscope through a patient’s mouth and into the stomach pouch while the patient is under anesthesia. Sutures and polypropylene fasteners are used to “take up” the extra tissue and make the pouch and/or stoma smaller.
Like with the earlier gastric bypass surgery, this limits food intake and slows the emptying of the stomach into the small intestine, which encourages weight loss.
Benefits of the StomaphyX™ Procedure
The StomaphyX™ option is an outpatient procedure with a quick recovery time. Other benefits include:
- Little to no pain for the patient
- Will not harm the potential for future treatment options
- Fewer risks than with traditional surgery
- No incision means no visible scarring
- Reduces risk of infection from surgical incisions
- Flexible and adaptable to different patient anatomies
Is StomaphyX™ Right for You?
If you have regained weight after your bariatric surgery, you may have a stretched stomach pouch and/or stoma, making you a good candidate for the StomaphyX™ procedure.
A simple video-scope procedure called an upper endoscopy can be performed to take measurements of your stomach pouch and stoma to determine if indeed there has been stretching.
Experiencing weight gain after your original gastric bypass surgery can be discouraging and unhealthy. But there may be hope for a fresh start with the StomaphyX™ procedure.
