How the SPIDER System Works

The SPIDER system is different than traditional laparoscopic surgical tools in that it is flexible and allows multiple instruments to be used through only one incision. This is done with articulating instrument delivery tubes that allow Dr. Liu to triangulate the instrument more easily during your surgery.

During your bariatric surgery:

• The SPIDER surgical device is inserted through an incision in your navel
• It is then expanded like an umbrella so that Dr. Liu may use a variety of tools to help him perform the surgery. A camera attached to the device allows Dr. Liu to see what he is doing
• Once the surgery is completed, SPIDER is then collapsed and removed through the original incision in your navel

The result is a nearly invisible scar made through only one incision. Your recovery will be more rapid since your body doesn't have to contend with healing many incisions at once. Traditional laparoscopic surgeries require multiple incisions. However, the SPIDER system requires only one, although certain patients may require more than one.
