ReShape Balloon Q&A

by Carson Liu, MD, FACS

What is the ReShape gastric balloon?

The ReShape balloon system is a type of gastric balloon that is inserted into the stomach to help patients feel fuller faster so they consume fewer calories and lose weight over time. The ReShape differs from other balloons because it uses two balloons to take up more space in your stomach, and the dual-balloon design is also designed to conform to the natural curve of the stomach, making it a more comfortable option.

How is the ReShape balloon inserted?

The ReShape gastric balloon system is inserted through the mouth using a long, flexible scope during an outpatient procedure that takes about 20 to 30 minutes to complete. Sedation is used during the procedure to enable the patient to “nap” while the balloon is being placed. Once the balloons are in place, they will be filled with a sterile saline solution. The amount of saline can be adjusted to suit the needs and the stomach size of each patient.

Will I be able to feel the balloon once it's in my stomach?

During the first few days after the balloon is inserted, patients may experience some discomfort, including bloating and nausea, but these issues will resolve once the stomach adjusts. Patients will consume a liquid diet for a few days, and then soft and solid foods will be reintroduced.

How long does a gastric balloon remain in place?

The ReShape gastric balloons remain in place for six months. During this time and for six months after the balloons have been removed, patients will receive guidance to help them learn to eat healthier so they can continue to maintain their weight loss once the balloons have been removed.

How will the ReShape balloon be removed?

The removal process is similar to the insertion process but in reverse. First, the saline solution will be removed from the balloons, and then the ReShape balloons will be carefully extracted through the mouth. Like the insertion procedure, removal takes about 20 to 30 minutes and is performed under sedation.
