ROSE (Restorative Obesity Surgery, Endolumenal)
Weight Loss Surgery in Los Angeles, CA
Not every patient who undergoes gastric bypass surgery is able to keep off the weight lost after the initial surgery.
Research has shown that weight regain after gastric bypass surgery can happen in some instances because the stomach pouch and stomach outlet into the small intestine (called the stoma) gradually stretch. This allows the patient to eat more and slows the feeling of being full. Pounds begin to add back on, and patients can be again at risk for life-threatening diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and heart disease.
Until recently, patients did not have many options after post-surgery weight gain. However, several procedures now exist that provide a second chance for weight loss surgery patients. One of those procedures is StomaphyX™. The other is called “ROSE,” which stands for Restorative Obesity Surgery, Endolumenal.
How It Works
ROSE is an outpatient, incision-free revisional weight loss procedure that decreases the size of a patient’s stoma and stomach pouch, returning them to the size they were immediately after the initial gastric bypass surgery.
A small endoscope and surgical tools are inserted through the patient’s mouth and esophagus into the stomach pouch. The tools are used to fold, then stitch and anchor the pouch tissue, reducing the size of the pouch and stoma.
Advantages of ROSE
- No visible scarring, since there are no external incisions made
- Less risk than traditional surgery
- Reduced infection risk
- Little post-operative pain
- Quick recovery time
- Patients usually return to work the next day
Is ROSE Right for You?
It will be important to determine if your stomach pouch and stoma have stretched by taking internal measurements. A simple endoscope-video procedure can be used for that determination. Other medical screenings may be needed as well.
If you are a former gastric-bypass patient who is experiencing weight gain in the years following the surgery, ROSE may be an option that is beneficial to your long-term health. in the Los Angeles, Santa Monica, Irvine and Culver City, area, please contact experienced weight loss surgeon Dr. Carson Liu to schedule an initial medical screening.
