Questions about LAP-BAND® Weight Loss Surgery

Bariatric Surgery in Los Angeles, CA

How overweight should I be to consider LAP-BAND® Weight Loss Surgery?

In general, to seriously consider LAP-BAND® surgery, you should be at least 60 – 90 pounds overweight. A better way to determine if LAP-BAND® weight loss surgery is right for you is to measure your Body Mass Index, or BMI. This measurement takes into account your height and weight to determine if you are overweight or not. If your BMI is between 30 and 60, LAP-BAND® weight loss surgery may be right for you.

Is the LAP-BAND® Weight Loss Surgery permanent?

No. The LAP-BAND® weight loss surgery is not a permanent procedure. It is reversible and can also be adjusted. When the LAP-BAND® is removed, the stomach can return to its original size, making it easier to regain the weight lost while the LAP-BAND® was in place.

What are the benefits of the LAP-BAND® Weight Loss Surgery?

Unlike other weight loss surgery options, the LAP-BAND® weight loss surgery is minimally invasive, reversible, adjustable, and offers a faster recovery time. The LAP-BAND® surgery is performed on an out-patient basis, allowing you to return home after the procedure.

Is LAP-BAND® Weight Loss Surgery the same as Gastric Bypass Surgery?

No. LAP-BAND® weight loss surgery is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a silicone band to create a smaller upper-stomach pouch, allowing you to eat less. The LAP-BAND® can be adjusted or removed as needed. Gastric Bypass weight loss surgery is an invasive surgery where the stomach is reduced with cutting or staples. Patients usually have to stay in the hospital for a few days following Gastric Bypass surgery.
